Sts. Peter and Paul

A betrayer and a murderer

From today’s Scripture: “The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed.”—2 Tim 4:17

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, two great men who started out as great sinners. One a betrayer and unfaithful, the other a murderer. How, then, can God use these men? How is it possible that the Lord stands by their side? I can barely forgive the person who cuts me off while I am driving. Much less the person who betrays or persecutes me!

Oh, but how amazing is our God who teaches us new ways to live and to be. God does not look at our sinfulness and cast us out; rather, he looks at our weakness and reaches out to give us strength. Yes, our burdens are many. For that very reason, we should humble ourselves and allow God to be our strength.

Let us pray: I praise you and thank you for all the times you have been there for me, for being my comfort and strength. Jesus, thank you. I trust in you.
