Sts. Peter and Paul

Creative tension

From today’s Scripture: I have kept the faith.” —2 Tim 4:7

“Two sides of the same coin” would describe Saints Peter and Paul, whom we celebrate today. St. Peter, appointed by Jesus as leader of his Church, is seen as the first pope, a unifying person in the Church. St. Paul is known best as a tireless evangelist, bringing the Church outside the fold, to new peoples everywhere. Theirs is a creative tension. The Church cannot fulfill its mission without both sides.

Where is the creative tension in our lives? How do we try to keep it together and stay rooted in who we are while at the same time being open to newness all around us? We would do well to pray for the spirit of both Peter, the rock, and Paul, the evangelist.

Let us pray: God, today let me be secure in my identity, but not closed-minded. Help me to bring my gifts to others, but also to see and receive the gifts others have for me.
