St. Mark

Daily Reflection

St. Mark

Go forth and spread the Good News!

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: ‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.’”—Mk 16:15

They don’t call this “the Great Commission” for nothing! The sending forth of disciples that is proclaimed in today’s Gospel is part of the lifeblood of the Church, rooted in the nature of God, who simply refuses to be contained! The commissioning words of Jesus on this Feast of St. Mark have echoed through 2,000-plus years as the missionary mandate of the Church.

Every Christian is called to be a missioner. It is Jesus himself, who breathes the Spirit onto us, who empowers us to proclaim the Good News. What is the good news? Of course it is that Jesus is raised from the dead, and everything that follows. For you and for me, during this Easter season, it is the breath of God stirring within us, drawing forth, through us, all that is good!

Let us pray: Jesus, help me open my heart to your Spirit. Stir within me today a desire to serve your will, and to spread your Good News of love—in words and action—to everyone I meet.
