Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The mercy of God

From today’s Scripture: “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.”—1 Jn 4:16

St. John Paul II gave a challenging homily when he visited St. Louis back in 1999. At the time, a man was on death row in Missouri; the Pope called for an end to the death penalty in the United States as both “cruel and unnecessary.” It was a call for mercy. In the same breath, he called for an end to racism in our country.

Mercy is what the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is all about. The blood that flowed from Jesus’ side at his execution is an outflowing of mercy for all of humanity. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is all about the loving mercy of Jesus, the very grace of God.

Let us pray: God, you know that we are nothing without your love. Pour out your grace upon us. Teach us to be merciful, to treat others with loving kindness.
