Pentecost Sunday

Daily Reflection

Pentecost Sunday

O, Comforter

From today’s Scripture: “Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.”—Pentecost Sequence

During Masses today, the Pentecost Sequence is read between the second reading and the Gospel. This beautiful sequence dates back to at least the 13th century and has been proclaimed on Pentecost Sunday ever since.

As we listen to the sequence, we need to recall the fear that the Apostles felt as they hid behind locked doors following Jesus’ death. Like the Apostles, often I have my faith shaken and I need to recall Jesus’ words that he will send the Holy Spirit to those who keep his word. And this Advocate will, as the end of the sequence states, “Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end.”

Let us pray: Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine.
