Glenmary Home Missioners is unique among religious communities because of its call to serve a single country—the United States. The Oct. 27 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pa. led to the deaths of 11 people, and has this nation mourning once again.
“As Catholics and Americans, we mourn these deaths because of our shared humanity, our shared status as Americans, and our shared faith heritage with the Jewish people,” says Frank Lesko, Glenmary’s Director of Catholic-Evangelical Relations. “St. John Paul II called the Jewish people our ‘elder brothers’ in faith. Today we pray God will bestow healing on this wounded part of our human family.”
“Once again someone has expressed hatred with a violent act,” says Tom Navin, Director of Glenmary’s Commission on Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation. “We must continue to work in our communities to restore the principles of justice to achieve the peace of mind to feel secure.”
The priests, brothers and lay staff of Glenmary, which have in the past served three counties in Pennsylvania, expressly condemn all acts of hatred, violence and discrimination.
