Crediting the magazine for “solid coverage,” the CPA judges awarded Glenmary Challenge third place for Best Magazine/Newsletter of the Year in the category of Mission Magazine (Overseas and Home).
Challenge editor John Stegeman earned second place for Best Analysis Writing for his piece “One Body in Christ.” The story focused on Glenmary’s role in Protestant-Catholic relations over the last 78 years.
Molly Williamson, former assistant editor of the Challenge, earned a third place in Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues: Dignity and Rights of Workers for her story “Cast a wide net.” The article focused on migrant workers from Mexico who come to the U.S. and work at a North Carolina seafood company.
Finally John and Molly teamed up with Frank Lesko, Glenmary’s director of Catholic-Evangelical Relations, for an honorable mention in Best Coverage of Ecumenical/Interfaith Issues. The category called for a submission of three stories. The Challenge submitted John’s “One Body in Christ,” Frank’s “One Family of Christ” and Molly’s “Brother Craig says ‘Good Morning.’”
The Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada strives to build and strengthen the value and worth of the Catholic press by facilitating the professional, economic and spiritual growth of its members. The awards banquet took place at the end of a week-long series of educational sessions.
