How to pray

From today’s Scripture: “This is how you should pray…” Mt 6:9

Have you ever been in a situation where you have been asked to open a meeting with a prayer or say a prayer before a gathering? You try to impress those around you with the beauty, depth, and thoroughness of your prayer, only to realize you sound like Sister Mary Clarence in “Sister Act”:

“And yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of no food, I will fear no hunger. We want you to give us this day, our daily bread. And to the republic for which it stands, and by the power invested in me, I pronounce us ready to eat. Amen.” (from the movie “Sister Act”)

Our prayer should never be just words strung together. God does not care how long or eloquent our prayer is. He wants to hear our hearts pouring out our love, honor, and praise, for he is our father. He wants to hear our passion and trust in him to provide for our needs, our deep desire to be united with him, and our sorrow in hurting our relationship with him and our brothers and sisters. Our prayer is a heartfelt “I love you” to God, our father.

Let us pray: Father, let my heart overflow with love for you during both the joys and the trials of my life. Give me the courage to stand firm in my trust in you, always knowing you will provide what I need when I need it.
