First Tuesday of Lent

Daily Reflection

First Tuesday of Lent

God speaks to us

From today’s Scripture: “One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”—Mt 4:4 (Gospel acclamation)

This exchange took place between my great-niece and her papa. Papa: “Natalie, God sees you and knows if you’re being good.” Natalie: “I know Papa, I talk to him all the time and he is a man of few words.” Needless to say, papa and mama were both stunned at what she said!

In hearing about their conversation, two things stand out for me. One, she talks to God all the time and two, God is a man of few words. Today’s readings are about God’s word and prayer. Our readings remind us that God speaks to us. We listen and might in turn speak to God. Oftentimes, there are many things that occupy our time. We find it difficult to find a quiet time or space (because our iPhone or iPad are always on?).

It is rather fitting that we have Jesus, a man of few words, teaching us to pray. The Our Father has everything one needs to pray. During Lent, take a few minutes and pray the Our Father, and ask for the grace to live one petition each day.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for your words of prayer. Give me the grace I need to pray more fervently and to listen more attentively during our time together.
