First Thursday of Lent

All good gifts

From today’s Scripture: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”—Mt 7:8,11

Jesus describes prayer as asking, seeking, and knocking. Ask is the easiest and simplest form of prayer. Seek conveys a real sense of sincerity. Knock tells to keep knocking on the door of heaven.

It would be a mistake if we think Jesus is laying down conditions which, if we fulfill them, God will be moved to respond to us. He is telling us that when we feel a need so intense that we go to the Lord again and again, that we should not be discouraged even if the answer is delayed. God really does care about what we ask or pray for at any given moment. God responds to our prayers by giving good gifts.

Jesus tells us that if we ask, seek, knock, then our heavenly Father will respond with “good gifts.” Our prayer must be to keep asking with sincerity. Let God worry about when he answers and which good gifts he will give us!

Let us pray: Lord, give me the grace to continue to seek you and your will for me today. Let me not grow weak or lose sight of your presence, but remain faithful in asking, seeking and knocking to know your will for me.
