First Friday of Lent

First Friday of Lent

More than one way to fast

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.’”—Mt 5:20

“I sorry.” Two words are spoken by a four year old after a fight with her cousin. The two of them return to playing as if nothing happened. It is as if their memory of the hurt is gone and being cousins is restored.

It seems to me true religion is of the heart. Jesus saw the good in the religious leaders of his day. But he challenged them against any hypocrisy. Jesus then goes on to encourage us to live perhaps one of the most difficult lessons of life, to forgive and be reconciled with others. He lived that truth to the last moment on the cross, when he forgave all who were involved in his death.

Is there anybody whom you need to forgive? Pray for the grace to forgive that person and let go of any feelings of anger or resentment I may have towards them.

Let us pray: Lord I pray to be reconciled with (person’s name). Let our relationship  be restored to one of friendship and love.
