Fifth Wednesday of Lent

Faith and action

From today’s Scripture: “Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.”—Jn 8:34

Lent is a time of liberation, a time to be introduced in the Lord’s home. I imagine heaven as where God is at home. I seek the same courage as the three youth in the Book of Daniel. I also remember today St. Oscar Arnulfo Romero from El Salvador, whose feast we celebrated a few days ago. He was the voice of the voiceless. The simplicity of his house and of the chapel where he was assassinated in 1980 remind me that modern saints have a message to pass on to us.

To possess the truth it was not enough to be a descendant of Abraham. People need to hear the word of Jesus and live according to it. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic? Not good enough! The faith we have must influence our actions. Being an in-name-only Catholic is not enough to hold the key to eternal life.

Let us pray: Free me, O Lord, from all my idols and from all that gets in the way of my freedom. Open your door to liberate me from my home of  slavery, my habits, my limitations, and my sins.
