Fifth Thursday of Easter

The joy of the Gospel

From today’s Scripture: “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete.”—Jn 15:11

Pope Francis was spot-on when he named joy to be an essential aspect of every Christian’s life. Sometimes, I think the greatest gift Christians can give to the world is to be people of joy. Christ has given us new life. Death no longer has the final say for us. We should be filled with joy!

But what would it look like to have complete joy?

For starters, I think Christian joy means avoiding undue cynicism. Or, put positively, to focus on all the ways the Spirit of God is working in our lives and in the world around us.

To have our joy be complete, we might begin by snuffing out any obsession with negativity that exists in our life and sharing with others the blessings we see all around us.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, make your joy complete in me. Cast away cynicism from my heart, and give me the grace to see your presence in the world around me. Amen.
