Judging no one
From today’s Scripture: “‘Has no one condemned you?’”—Jn 8:10
Jesus speaks during the Feast of Tabernacles. We are in the Temple area. It is full of people and Jesus makes God known through his word. He judges no one. Only at the final judgment will he and the Father judge.
Today, we see Jesus stooping down to doodle (draw?) on the ground when faced by stone-holding accusers of one of two guilty of adultery, the woman. In this particular case it was against Jewish law to confront only one of the guilty party. We can only guess what Jesus drew twice in the dust. The scribes and Pharisees had sought to catch him in a no-win situation; one by one, as he quietly drew, they silently departed.
Let us pray: O Lord, I know you are the light for me and all those who do not trust that you are the perfect revelation of God. Help me to recenter myself when I am unable to recognize your guidance and mercy.
