26th Thursday in Ordinary Time

Active contemplation

From today’s Scripture: “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”—Lk 10:2

I used to strive to be more of a contemplative, but in the end it did not work out for me. I still have the desire but I am not sure I have the ability. Sometimes I find prayer burdensome and hard. Service is easier. There are often concrete results to service but not concrete results to my prayer. I like results.

Now when I am asked, I tell people I’m an active contemplative. This essentially says little about my prayer life! But it does confirm my call and at times preference to service. I am constantly relearning: The true and authentic call of God is to be balanced, with neither prayer nor service being a burden.

Let us pray: Breath of life, show me your way today. Help me to listen, to see you in the things I do. Awaken me to the needs of others.
