26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Living life like Jesus

From today’s Scripture: “Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus.” —Phil 2:5

The times in my everyday life that are the most difficult to find joy in are those household tasks that never seem to end: cooking dinner, washing the dishes, folding laundry. I grumble at the amount that needs to be done and the thankless task that it is. When I’m elbow-deep in yet another full sink of dirty dishes, I forget about the words of St. Teresa of Kolkata who said, “Wash the plate not because it is dirty nor because you are told to wash it, but because you love the person who will use it next.”

St. Teresa is just one example of many saints who lived out St. Paul’s call to live a life in the same attitude as Jesus. And she did so not just in the big moments of feeding the poor and sheltering the homeless, but also in the little moments of washing the dishes and greeting a stranger with a smile. May we find a small way today to emulate the love and joy of Christ.

Let us pray: Lord, walk with me today and show me the ways that I can live more like you.
