19th Thursday in Ordinary Time

What a gift!

From today’s Scripture: “I canceled your entire debt when you pleaded with me. Should you not have dealt mercifully with your fellow servant, as I dealt with you?”—Mt 18:33

At a college commencement ceremony a wealthy benefactor announced that he was going to pay off all of the college debt that every member of the class had accumulated. Many graduates struggle for years to pay the debt and it seems they go for long periods with little progress. What a gift! What a relief!

But then the benefactor gave another gift, in the form of a challenge. He asked them if they would be willing to help another student struggling with debt pay it down? He left them free to decide: How would they respond to generosity?

Let us pray: Lord, everything I have is a gift from you. Create in me a generous heart.
