18th Friday in Ordinary Time

Daily Reflection

18th Friday in Ordinary Time

My actions count.

From today’s Scripture: “For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay each according to his conduct.“ —Mt 16:27

Jesus is always very honest about what it takes to be a disciple. In today’s Gospel he tells us, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” When I hear this, I think about the crosses of daily life that I am called to bear. I seldom think, though, about how I react to that cross.

Jesus also reminds us that our conduct today will determine how we will be repaid when he comes again. That puts a whole new spin on day-to-day decision making. Will I follow Jesus with my actions, or will my conduct come up short?

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, help me follow your example of selfless love. May I willingly accept the crosses of life and be the person you will welcome into your Father’s glory.
