12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Breath of the Spirit

From today’s Scripture: “‘What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.’”—Mt 10:27

There is an old method of “carrying fire,” used by ancient peoples. A traveler would stay warm by the fire at night. In the morning they would use a moist, green leaf as a wrapper to keep a coal from the fire for the next night. When they got to their next campsite, they would pull their coal out of the dark, surround it with twigs, and blow it until a fire emerged. From the darkness came a great light!

Jesus tells us that the Good News we keep wrapped in our hearts we must bring into broad daylight. The Holy Spirit is the breath that brings forth the flame, empowering us to “shout from the rooftops” that which we have heard, perhaps in a whisper. What a call to be missionary!

Let us pray: Loving God, give me a missionary spirit. Today, help me to know your love, to grow your love, and to proclaim your love in word and deed.
