St. Athanasius

From today’s Scripture: “Philip said to Jesus, ‘Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.’”—Jn 14:8-9

I find Philip’s statement to be profound. Do we really believe that if we see the Father “that will be enough for us”? Do I believe that? Do you? If it is true, then we truly have a vision of the transcendent! This is a recognition that only God can fulfill us, that our “enough” is only found in our Creator, and that true joy, goodness, and contentment is found in him. But do we believe this?

Don’t we work endlessly for other ends that we think will be “enough”? Do we not place other things — retirement, promotion, physical healing, the birth of that longed for child — in the category of enough? Of course, these are good things and worthy to be prayed about. But enough is something different altogether. It is to know the Christ. It is to know the Father. In them we see that time is short, but eternity is long…and we are eternal beings. What might feel enough today could be gone tomorrow. But our enough, our peace, is in the one from whom all good comes.

Let us pray: Lord, we pray that in you we might find enough. Care for our needs today as you choose and may our hearts always find rest in you.
