From today’s Scripture: “As he blessed them, he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God.” —Lk 24:51-53
Besides the fact that Jesus is ascending, a startling part of this story to me is the apostles’ reaction. Recall the other times Jesus was separated from the apostles—fear in the boat on the storm, terror and fleeing during the passion, hiding in the upper room after the crucifixion. Now Jesus is ascending and leaving them. They pay him homage and confidently return to Jerusalem with joy and head to the temple to preach the good news. Recall, this is even before the Holy Spirit descends on Pentecost Sunday. How I wish my faith was this strong and confident.
Let us pray: Lord, during those times when doubt creeps into my faith, let me recall the confidence of the apostles on Ascension Thursday and fill me with the joy of the Good News.
