Sts. Cornelius & Cyprian

OT Summer Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’ He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you, arise!’ The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.”—Lk 7:13-15

To be moved with pity is—or should be—a way of life for Christians. It comes with a dual mandate. First, it calls for an eyesight that instinctively recognizes a person in need. In the presence of a very large crowd, Jesus sees the widow, acknowledges her pain, and tells her not to weep. Without this sharpened eyesight, we can miss a child craving for attention, a student longing for acceptance, a friend seeking support, or a spouse looking for appreciation.

Second, it calls for an engagement in actions that bring life and promote healing. Jesus raises the dead son to life. He lets him sit and speak. Only then does he give him to his mother. In an authentic Christian discipleship, there is no room for anything that breaks the human spirit, denies a seat at the table, or silences a voice!

Let us pray: Jesus, move me with compassion for others. Give me eyesight to see what you see and the courage to do what you do. Amen!
