St. Vincent de Paul

Daily Reflection

St. Vincent de Paul

A need, a response

From today’s Scripture: Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my call for help.”—Ps 88:2

There was a surprise at the national conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, not long ago. A sheriff from Humphrey’s County, Tennessee, site of major flooding earlier in the year, had come to Baltimore to give a presentation about the flood relief he directed, and how helpful the local St. Vincent de Paul society had been. In fact, two local Vincentians received national awards for their service.

Then Sheriff Chris Davis was recognized with the 2022 Emergency Management Partner of the Year Award. He had no idea it was coming! He told those gathered, “With the flood and what St. Vincent de Paul has done with the flood and with our community is truly fabulous. To watch the miracles that have come from that, to watch the things that are happening from that gives you faith, hope, trust and belief that there are people out there that truly care about others.”

A need, a response, community. Those are the values of our faith.

Let us pray: Today, Lord, open my eyes so that I see the need around me. Help me to be your hands in feet to the people I meet.
