St. Teresa of Avila

Our Lady of the Fields-3 (1)

From today’s Scripture: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”—Jn 15:5

We see in Our Lady of the Fields the beauty of all creation, the ground and soil restore its sacredness that God once intended it to have. This is why Our Lady of the Fields resonates with farmers and field workers: it is these people who recognize the importance of good soil for our crops and livestock. Just as soil, dirt, and seeds are an essential part of the farmer’s life, they are also vital to the image of Our Lady of the Fields. She in a sense restores the sacredness of the land. This is not to be understood in a pantheistic way (where all things are god), but it is to be understood in a proper Christian way: that God is bigger than creation, but that God’s goodness exists in all of it.

Let us pray: Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Fields, today let me see your beauty in all things.
