St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

Web_OT Summer Email Header 2026 1

From today’s Scripture: “Whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”  2 Cor 9:6

We venerate the saints because of their heroism. During the persecution of the early Church, St. Lawrence bravely protected the poor, giving away all of the Church’s resources after the pope was executed and the Roman Emperor demanded that he turn them over. Instead, he presented the poor as the Church’s riches. He was tortured and killed for it.

Honestly, we are not such heroes, willing to die for our faith. But can we learn from our heroes? Can we put the needs of people in poverty out in front of our lives?

Let us pray: Jesus, today give me a grateful heart. Help me to see how much I have, in spite of my troubles, and to share it generously with people struggling against poverty.

Today’s author is John Feister, former Communications Director of Glenmary, now writing a novel set in Appalachia.
