Easter Friday

The simple truth

From today’s Scripture: “So he said to them, ‘Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.’ So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.”—Jn 21:6

One-hundred-fifty-three large fish, we learn. The man on the shore, a carpenter who told the fishermen where to find the fish, sits at the fire and cooks up breakfast. Can this be the same one whom we see decked in gold, towering from our cathedral frescoes? Could it be the same man whom we see nailed to the cross above the altar as a common criminal? Who is this Jesus?

Those 153 represented every known people on earth in biblical times. Our Lord, King of Kings, Christ crucified, Jesus the short-order cook, sends us all out to everyone in the world to tell his story of kingship, suffering and resurrection, united, and of the humble way we are to carry his witness.

Let us pray: Lord, you mystify me with your simple ways. Help me to set aside all that is self-important, to be the humble one cooking up breakfast for the people you will bring into my life today.
