From today’s Scripture: “After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.’ Simon said in reply, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.’ When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.” — Lk 5:4-5

This is one of my favorite stories in the New Testament. Peter was an experienced fisherman. Probably not a very educated man, but he knows fishing. Here comes a carpenter from Nazareth who starts preaching from a boat and suddenly thinks he knows more than Peter about fishing. Knowing fishermen, I suspect Luke has probably cleaned up Peter’s response. However Peter actually replied, he was willing to give it one more attempt because Jesus told him. Of course, his nets are full of fish. How often do we know something is not going to work so we don’t try? Are we open to what Jesus is asking of us?

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, how often have we heard “all things are possible with God”?  Open my mind and heart to the seemingly impossible. And give me the faith to do what you ask of me.
