From today’s Scripture: “I will open my mouth in parables. I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.” —  Mt 13:35

This Scripture passage is well-known to many of us, containing the parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast. Contextually, it falls within a series of parables in this section of the book of Matthew. But what is a parable? The dictionary defines it as “a usually short, fictitious story that illustrates a moral attitude or religious principle, or something that provides an instructive lesson.” Jesus used examples relevant to the daily lives of his listeners to explain a complex lesson. More importantly, he chose to announce the Good News of the Gospel and essential truths hidden from the beginning of the world to our humble humanity. He chose to impart this knowledge, eternal Truth, to each one of us. And he used simple language to help ensure that we understood. How awesome, and humbling, and lifechanging, is that?

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for choosing to share the Good News of the Gospel with each one of us. Give me a listening ear and a receptive heart, so that I may come to understand and live the Gospel in my daily life.
