Daily Reflection

17th Tuesday in Ordinary Time

The Lord is kind and merciful.

From today’s Scripture: “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” —Ex 34:6

How does one know God? One way we know him is from sacred Scripture. Various passages in both the Old and New Testaments tell us about God, but the one above stands out to me. The Lord is merciful, gracious, kind, faithful. If we sin and repent, he forgives. If we forget our place in relationship to him, he remembers.

But the lines that follow are challenging. God does not “declare the guilty guiltless.” Likewise in today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about those who will be thrown into the “fiery furnace.” Our faith isn’t easy, but remember; the Lord is kind and merciful.

Let us pray: Almighty God, have mercy on me. Help me come to know you, and to discern and carry out your will.
