From today’s Scripture: “Blessed…”—Mt 5:3

Do we want to be blessed? If we do, then we need to dive right into the Beatitudes, which are featured in today’s Gospel.

But you may be like me. Sometimes I begin reading through these Beatitudes, recognize how far away I am from living them, see how many there are, and decide instead to either close, or flip to another section of, my Bible.

If you, too, feel overwhelmed by the Beatitudes, here’s a practice that might help.

  1. In the morning, pick one. For instance: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
  2. Pray for an opportunity and the grace to live this today.
  3. Throughout the day, keep looking for these God-moments to be blessed.
  4. At the close of the day, examine your conscience: “How did I live this Beatitude today.”
  5. Repeat the next day.

Without a doubt, even if you feel you failed to live this fully in the day, you are approaching blessedness by your efforts. Remember that God is never outdone in generosity.

Let us pray: Jesus, help me to pursue just one of your Beatitudes this day so that I may approach blessedness.
