From today’s Scripture: “They were all weeping loudly as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him, for they were deeply distressed that he had said that they would never see his face again.”—Acts 20:37-38
We’re witnessing a truly poignant moment: St. Paul’s farewell to the leaders in Ephesus. The raw emotion of that scene — the tears, the embraces, and the kisses — testifies to the deep bond between a shepherd and his people. Across the country right now, this same scene is unfolding in many parishes as priests prepare for new assignments. Over dinner recently, a priest friend shared his excitement about starting at a new parish while expressing profound gratitude for the incredible warmth and faith of the community he is leaving behind. He laughed as he pointed out a particularly memorable card from a fourth grader at the parochial school:
Dear Father Anthony:
Thank you for being our priest and preaching so long! We enjoy your enthusiasm as a preacher. We enjoy your style of preaching. Thank you for leading our church in the ceremonies. You make the church lively and exciting. Again, thanks a lot!
P.S. The bread and wine taste better at your Mass!
Let’s say a word of appreciation to our pastors today, shall we?
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, let the peace of your presence fill the space between the memories we cherish and the new paths you have prepared for us.
