From today’s Scripture: “Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man…”—Mt 1:19
The best painting of St. Joseph that I have seen was painted by the 19th century artist Henry Ossawa Tanner. I found a different Joseph, who is holding the baby Jesus while Mary is asleep on a mat on the floor. Simple and beautiful: Joseph the protector of Jesus and Mary. Joseph’s eyes are looking forward to an unknown future with hope and love.
Joseph is a great example for all, especially fathers. No words but great action. Tanner’s painting shows a kind, caring husband and foster father. For Joseph, strength comes with love and service. Our Lenten reflection on the life of Joseph shows us a blessed life.
Let us pray: St. Joseph, lead us in the times of life in which we may walk in doubt. Protect those who have lost their way and lead all of us to Jesus.
