33rd Tuesday in Ordinary Time

OT Summer Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”—Lk 19:5

“Well, that didn’t turn out the way I expected…” How often have we done something and the subsequent result was not what we had anticipated? Sometimes it’s better than expected, and other times not quite so good!

Imagine Zacchaeus’ reaction when he hustles up a tree just for a glimpse of Jesus as he passes. Jesus recognizes the effort that Zacchaeus puts forth just to see him. Not only does he catch a glimpse of Jesus—Jesus insists that he must stay with Zacchaeus, and that salvation has come to Zacchaeus. This, obviously, had a transformative effect on Zacchaeus. In turn, Zacchaeus, a tax collector, vows to give half of his wealth to the poor and repay any extortion four times over.

How often have we experienced an unexpected blessing? And how did we react? Was it a transformative experience or did we go back to our normal life after the experience?

Let us pray: Lord, help me remember that you must stay at my house every day. Today help me make an effort to go beyond just catching a glimpse of you.
