18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

OT Summer Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “All things are vanity!…For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest.” —Eccl 1:2; 2:22-23

It can be hard to focus on what is above, and it is so easy to focus on what is here around us. Life can be filled with so much desire for things that have little eternal importance. Much of what is advertised is superfluous and unneeded. Comparing ourselves with our friends and neighbors is not helpful. Working hard to reach a high social or economic goal is not the ultimate purpose of our lives. We are being reminded today of what is eternal—our home in heaven. And who is eternal—our Triune God and each of us.

Let us pray: Lord, may we make the last line of the Gospel for today be our prayer: May we be rich in what matters to God.
