From today’s Scripture: “People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”—Mt 9:17
When Pope John XXIII called for the Second Vatican Council, he desired to see the Church that embraces the fresh air so that all may breathe anew. In a way, the teaching of the council was to look at the Church and the world with new eyes and allow “the signs of the times” to teach us new ways of being a Church.
Our life must allow the breath of God, so ancient yet ever new, to illuminate our hearts so that we can embrace each new day with the God of surprises. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. In other words, what old self will we need to let go so that we let the new transform us?
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth.
