13th Friday in Ordinary Time

Good over bad

From today’s Scripture: “‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.’”—Mt 9:13

Do we accept this? Some of us may hear this verse and think God has had mercy on me, but when we think of John or Jane Doe, we may think God’s mercy may never reach them. Others think God is merciful to everyone else but there is no way he can be merciful with me

We fail to see mercy for what it is. Mercy is earned by no one. It is freely given to all who will accept it. God is merciful because he desires us for himself, not because any of us did anything amazing to earn it. He is merciful because he is good. Now is the time for us to learn to be more like Jesus: merciful towards others and ourselves.

Let us pray: Open my eyes, Lord, to see you in my life, and in the lives of those around me. Give me your grace to lighten up a little: to be generous in spirit, to forgive others as you would forgive, to seek forgiveness from those whom I have wronged.
