St. Augustine once said that sometimes we don’t receive what we ask for because God is still preparing our hearts to be big enough to receive what he has in store.

Both the first reading and the psalm remind us that whatever we ask from our father in heaven, we will surely receive, but we must prepare our hearts. How? By keeping his commands and doing what pleases him.

That is how we build the Kingdom of God. We recognize that what we ask and receive is to enhance his kingdom on earth. May our New Year’s resolution be hinged on this truth.

Let us pray: Bless me today, God, with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people so that I may work for justice, freedom, and peace.
