30th Saturday in Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time Header-2

From today’s Scripture: “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.” — Psalm 42:1

When our four children were small, one might say, “Mama, when’s dinner? I’m STARVING!” As a sensitive mother and social justice advocate, I probably resisted the urge in those moments to give the child a lecture on what starvation actually is (“It’s not what you’re feeling, kid”); instead, I made a snack.

Which of us doesn’t sometimes confuse our wants, needs, and deepest desires? Our consumerist culture encourages us to fill our emptiness with all sorts of goods, gadgets, and experiences that don’t ultimately satisfy. I find it essential to spend contemplative time alone with God (and away from devices) to get attuned to my deepest longings: daily prayer in solitude, walks in nature, Sabbath renewal, and an annual silent retreat all give me what I long for most: a closer relationship with God.

Let us pray: Lord God, help me to prioritize quiet time spent alone with you each day.
