30th Friday in Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time Header-2

From today’s Scripture: “On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.” — Luke 14:1

This scene puts Jesus in risky territory. And he doesn’t take the path of least resistance. He violates Jewish tradition by healing on the Sabbath and then challenges religious leaders and others present to grow spiritually.

Christianity is not about tepid politeness. At times we are called to help others deepen their faith, break free from small-mindedness, and move their belief into action. At those moments we should expect resistance, even risk.

But let’s note Jesus’ methods. He meets with likely opponents, asks questions, and encourages depth of thought and heartfelt response: very different from much of the “discourse” in our society today.

Let us pray: Jesus, give me the courage to lovingly challenge others when you call me to.
