29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time Header-2

From today’s Scripture: “It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.” — Isaiah 45:5-6

Some things are hidden in plain sight. Like in Dante’s Paradiso, divine presence in our lives eludes even the most serious pilgrims on the journey.

Our scriptural citation from the prophet Isaiah is a case in point: Even though Cyrus, the anointed one, may never know it, God’s mighty hand works in his very sight, overturning nations and kings before him. Such is our mighty God. He works through us and for us, so that his divine plan may be fulfilled in us and for us, even — and especially — in those moments when we do not know how and may be obtuse to it. This text, for me at least, invites a spiritual stance: to always trust the mighty hand of God.

Let us pray: May the good Lord grant us enough faith to trust that there is none besides him, the Lord, and only that is enough for us this day. Amen.
