Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

Ordinary Time Header-2

From today’s Scripture: “For the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.” — Luke 12:12

Jesus exhorts his apostles to carry out the mission of proclaiming the Gospel to a world that will oppose them, sometimes violently. He instructs them to rely on the Holy Spirit when testifying at trial.

Today’s saint is a great example. St. Ignatius of Antioch is sent to Rome by order of Emperor Trajan for refusing to apostatize. He gives testimony in seven letters composed on his long, arduous journey. He witnesses publicly to the faith when he meets the lions in the Circus Maximus. This saint, and today’s Gospel, inspire us to give testimony to the Catholic faith.

Let us pray: By the intercession of St. Ignatius of Antioch, may I be emboldened to give Spirit-filled testimony to the Truth. Amen.

Today’s author is Deacon Scott Watford, missionary pastoral coordinator at Glenmary’s Holy Family mission in Early County and St. Luke mission in Randolph County, Georgia.
