From today’s Scripture: “But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.” — Matthew 22:11 

When attending the heavenly banquet, proper attire is required. The baptized receive a white garment, which is a carryover from the ancient Church. The catechumens of ancient times cast off their old garments, go into the water, and emerge to be clothed in a new white garment. This being unclothed and re-clothed is a symbol of the old life ending and the new life in Christ beginning. Our baptismal vocation is to wear the baptismal garment we receive unstained to the end. This is to persevere in faith and good works. We are thus properly attired for the heavenly banquet.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help me by your grace to arrive at the heavenly banquet with the baptismal garment unstained, that I may praise and glorify you forever. Amen.
