From today’s Scripture: “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”—Mk 10:21
Glenmary’s patroness is Our Lady of the Fields, whose devotion originated in France among the farmworkers in rural France. She was brought by the Jesuit Martyrs in the 17th century.
Our Lady of the Fields is not a devotion for the scholarly or educated. Glenmary founder Father William Howard Bishop had originally chosen her because she resonates with field workers and farmers. Nowadays, the rural fields are filled with immigrant workers from other countries; she has new cause for devotion.
Let us pray: Loving God, open my heart to the wisdom of the Blessed Mother, especially in the devotion to Our Lady of the Fields. Help me to pray as she prayed, that the “hungry be filled with good things.”
Today’s author is Glenmary Brother Thomas Nguyen, currently assigned in Martin County, North Carolina, for his advanced missionary formation.
