From today’s Scripture: “Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.” — Luke 12:6

Jesus exhorts his apostles to persevere in the face of the persecution that will inevitably arise as they proclaim his Gospel. He first challenges them to speak openly what he has revealed to them privately. The Gospel is not to be whispered behind closed doors. It is to be shouted from the housetops.

Jesus next encourages his apostles with comforting words. God cares even for tiny sparrows. How much more must God care for them? Courageously spread the Word as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ, trusting in God’s providence. A timely message for today’s Church.

Let us pray: Most merciful heavenly Father, grant that I may so trust in your providential care that I may proclaim the Gospel courageously by my manner of speech and by my manner of life. Amen.
