Fourth Monday of Easter

What’s the bottom line?

From today’s Scripture: “I am the gate…I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”—Jn 10:10

Often in meetings, the phrase tossed out is, “What’s the bottom line?” In other words, cut to the chase, no beating around the bush, why are we here?

In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays it out plainly, but still the Pharisees do not understand. Jesus’ use of the phrase “I AM” is significant as it indicates Jesus’ divine nature—remember God telling Moses his name, “I AM WHO AM.” He then follows that by plainly announcing why He has come—so that we, his sheep, might have life and live it more abundantly. Again, this phrasing harkens back to the Old Testament Psalm 23: the good shepherd (God) who takes care of all the sheep’s needs.

Let us pray: Lord, let me hear your voice, so that I may enter the gate you offer me. Lead me to the pathways of the life you planned for me.
