Fifth Saturday of Lent

Jesus for everyone

From today’s Scripture: “He [the high priest] prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.”—Jn 11:51-52

We, who are baptized, are thrilled that Jesus died for us and united us to Himself. It gives us joy. It is the foundation of the Christian faith and our hope for eternal life. But, the Holy Spirit inspired the high priest to see something even bigger: Jesus would redeem not only me, but also he made all people children of God through Baptism. He formed us into the one Body of Christ.

The Church expressed that unity very soon after the resurrection of Jesus by baptizing both Jews and Gentiles into this one Body of Christ. These were people who previously did not respect each other, would not eat with each other, or even socialize with each other. But, Jesus made them one, and the people began to live as one. Our task today is to let Jesus unite all Christian groups and all people as one.

Let us pray: Jesus, I know you made me one with other Christians in the one Body of Christ. Please help me appreciate that unity and help me live, not isolated from other Christians, but as one with them.
