Daily Reflection

28th Wednesday in Ordinary Time

We are called.

From today’s Scripture: “‘The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.’” —Lk 10:2

I work as Vocations Director for Glenmary. I have seen this scripture passage used in promotional material for priestly vocations so often that I can easily think that all it demands of me is to pray for more men to respond to their call! But this scripture passage says that Jesus sent out 72 disciples. That number 72 represented the entire Christian community of his time, not just a group or the priests.

So, yes, you and I should pray for those discerning their vocation to the priesthood. But we must also recognize that God is calling us to share the Good News anywhere and wherever we are called. We have the same mission to evangelize the world as did the apostles 2,000 years ago.

Let us pray: Jesus, I know you have been inviting me to serve you in some way special. I have not always listened. Help me to open myself, to respond and be a person who shares your love with the world.
