28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Accept the invitation.

From today’s Scripture: “Then [the king] said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’” —Matthew 22:8-9

I am in the season of life where everyone my age is getting married. When a new invitation arrives in the mail, I go through the same mental process. Will we attend the wedding? If so, decide how and when we will travel there. Plan where to stay the night. Think about which dress to wear. Purchase a gift. There is a lot of time, energy, and money that goes into accepting an invitation. But the joy in celebrating a new marriage with the couple far outweighs the cost of preparing for it.

Every week, we are invited to a great celebration in the form of the Mass. How do we prepare for it? Do we take the same care as we do when we attend a wedding? Reading the Scriptures, arriving to church early, and praying for a few moments in silence before Mass begins are a few easy ways to prepare our hearts for the greatest celebration we can attend. Let us be ready to accept the invitation!

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for the invitation to join you at the feast that is the Mass. This week, help me to prepare my heart and mind to attend the feast more fully.
