Honesty in prayer

From today’s Scripture: “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?’ He answered, ‘You have said so.’” —Mt 26:25

Our prayer can be like the scene that is described in today’s Gospel. We can ask questions and listen as the disciples did or we can try to deceive as Judas did.

The disciples asked Jesus, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” Our questions might be, “how can I prepare a bigger space for you in my heart?” or “what do you want me to do to follow you more closely?” Judas was only deceiving himself when he said to Jesus, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus was not deceived, he answered, “You have said so.”

We need to ask ourselves, “Am I being honest with Jesus in my prayer?” If so let us be more open to listen to Jesus’ response and if not let us take that first step to change our heart and to be more honest in our relationship with Jesus.

Let us pray: O Jesus, I come to you every day and share what is on my mind and in my heart. Give me the courage to trust you enough so that I can share everything, and not just the things I think that you want to hear. Help me to hear your responses to my questions and give me the courage to obey.
