Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Easter Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb.” —Lk 1:39-41

Today’s reading is very familiar; in the past I’ve always focused on the infant John’s reaction of joy upon hearing Mary. However, as I re-read it today, the one thing that pops out to me is the humility of Mary.

Here a teenage girl just found out that she is pregnant with the Messiah. But instead of enjoying the great blessing and having people wait on her, she rushes out to serve her kinswoman Elizabeth. Then when Elizabeth proclaims Mary’s blessed status, Mary replies with that familiar phrase, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,” squarely placing the credit on God’s work.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, just as Mary went with haste to visit Elizabeth, may we set our pride and ego aside and hurry to see people, bringing them the Lord as we share in their needs and their joys.
